COMMISSIONER'S MID-YEAR TEAM POWER RANKINGS

In 2022 & 2023, our teams events quickly transformed from casual events to formal, serious competitions. The alternate shot format added a completely new dimension to competitive FlingGolf and brought the same level of skilled play and intense drama that we've come to see in the individual competitions. With that heightened level of play, came the establishment of several branded teams with their own unique personas.

Because it has been a year of transformation, with many teams being added and the composition of a lot of teams changing, there is no perfect rankings formula and a bit of subjectivity has to be injected into the rankings. In 2024, this division will have standardized rankings but for the time being, we offer you the 2023 MID-YEAR TEAM POWER RANKINGS.

Based on a combination of historical results, recent play and even team play from now defunct teams, this is the WLF Commissioner's view on the current state of play. At this moment. Since I'm not tied to any rankings formula, expect these rankings to change often. In fact, I literally might wake up tomorrow and change them.

LET THE DEBATES BEGIN...

#1: APEX FLINGCREW

TEAM MEMBERS

SHOWTIME - Austin Ebersole

SCANTRON - Sam Scannell

Why THEY'RE #1

3x Teams Champions - San Diego Open, 2023 New Swarm Classic & Colorado Open.

No debate here. Until someone beats them this year, Apex is at the top. Did I really just say that? Shame on me.

#2: VIPERS FC

TEAM MEMBERS:

KENZO - Ken Pytluk

ISLAND HOPPER - Jake Anderson

Why THEY'RE #2

It's real close between #2 & #3, but two 2nd place finishes in the last two tournaments seals the deal.

Cornering the market on low-to-high technique in teams play, Ken and Jake are usually going to be in the hunt.

#3: SPARTAN FLING CREW

TEAM MEMBERS:

MAINE EVENT - Mike DeRusha

SVL - Shawn Van Lancker

Why THEY'RE #3

Ever so slightly behind #2, Spartan has also racked up two 2nd places (Virginia FlingGolf Open and San Diego Open). While they finished just outside of the finals at the 2023 New Swarm Classic, they rallied to take 3rd in Colorado.

1+1 = 3 when it comes to Spartan and the way they approach alternate shot play. Combining strategic team shot selection with a precise short game makes Spartan a force to be reckoned with.

#4: KEYSTONE FC

TEAM MEMBERS:

BIG CAT - Mike Edwards

THE MOUNTAINEER - Zac Mulvey

Why THEY'RE #4

The first Teams Champion at the Virginia FlingGolf Open, their win increased the stakes and brought on an onslaught of competition. Still, they followed it up with a 4th place finish in San Diego and and just missed the cut in Delaware.

Keystone FC defined what it meant to play like a team and have fun while doing it. After a summer of playing together consistently, look for them to get back on track in the fall.

#5: SAVAGE FS

TEAM MEMBERS:

TINMAN - Neil Little

SOLDIER BOY - Ryan Stainbrook

PUBLIC ENEMY - Daniel Dillinger

Why THEY'RE #5

OK - the rankings start to get real crowded now and the next three teams all have great arguments for being as high as #4.

Savage FS has seen a couple of different compositions in 2023, but managed a 3rd place in San Diego and a 4th in Colorado. Meanwhile, Tinman's 2x Top 5 finishes with the former BIG DE-NRG team solidifies their ranking.

Savage FS is the only team that boasts two veterans and their strong military ties are going to make them a team to watch for years to come.

#6: FLYIN' BIRDIES

TEAM MEMBERS:

BIRDIE OF PREY - Krysta Smith

FLYIN' RHINO - James Braley

Why THEY'RE #6

Easily could have slotted them in at #4 given their recent play: a 3rd place finish at the New Swarm Classic followed by a 5th place finish in Colorado put everyone on notice that they are here to stay.

The first co-ed WLF Team, Flyin' Birdies ability to leverage optimal tee selection to maximize reggies made everyone rethink their strategy in team play. Applying a team approach to every shot, their recent success is no surprise.

#7: FURY FLING SQUAD

TEAM MEMBERS:

REGGIE QUEEN - Britt Morrison

SHOW'S OVER - Brooke Ebersole

ICE MAN - Brandon Hammond

LUCKY JACK - Jack Bovich

PODFATHER - Adam Copeland

BIG COUNTRY - Brooks Medford

Why THEY'RE #7

Is it one team or is it several teams in one? No seriously, could someone actually tell me? I'm not really sure.

In all seriousness, Fury FS is defining where teams play is headed. With an all-star roster of ranked players from the Mens and Womens division, Fury is the first Super Team that is not just putting two high-ranked players together.

Playing together and as parts of other teams, the members of Fury FS have already had several Top 5 and Top 10 finishes. With larger teams and the potential for multiple teams per tournament, their existence will inform how rankings are calculated in the future.
